Ramdurg is one of the ten
talukas of belgaum district The Ramdurg city is situated
on the bank of the river malaprabha towards the eastern
part of Belgaum district which is located in the beautiful
spot. The sceneries around Ramdurg is so attractive which
is decorated with green farms mountain ranges may flowers
all-round. It has a historical importance.
Ramdurg was one of the princely states
of British India under the Bombay presidency belonging to
Maratha Brahmins. In 1778 Haidar Ali of mysore and in 1784
his son Tipu Sultan invaded the fort of Ramdurg then ruler
Venkat Roa Bhave and his family were taken prisoner and
sent to mysore. Then he was restored to Naragund and Raja
Ram Rao received Ramdurg further the peshwa made both Naragund
and Ramdurg as one state for the convenience of ruling.
Ramdurg as the world it self suggests “The
fort of Shri Ram” The ancient inscriptions state that
Ramdurg was known as “Bhujabala gadha which means
this was the place very popular in exhibiting the bravery
through duels wrestling.
The mythological story is also associated
with the present name of Ramdurg. The story says that the
lord Rama once visited this place when he was in his Vanavas
and Shabri, the great devotee of lord Rama.and eat fruits
she offered to him. That is why we find a Shabri temple
near by the town of Ramdurg and also there is temple of
Lord Rama near the south gate of the town, which is also
known as Venkateshwar temple.
As of 200/- Indian census it had a population
of 22741. 11528 males and 11212 females. It has a population
density of 187perkmz sex ratio in Ramdurg taluka is of 971.
The town has an average literacy rate of 63% higher than
the national average.
The principal occupation of Ramdurg are
agriculture and weaving sugar cane, jawar, groundnut ,etc
are the chief crops of this area.
Recently Ramdurg taluka has achieved economic
development which is in progress. There are four Nationalized
Banks and many co-operative Banks which help the people
to achieve economic progression and prosperity.
There is a sugar factory near Ramdurg which
has provided many youth of Ramdurg the constant employment,
besides the weaving profession is very popular in Ramdurg.
It has achieved progression even in the
field of auto-mobile. The city has well-equipped automobile
,shoe room ,like Hero Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Yamaha, Mahindra
,Farmatrac etc.All there multinational company support the
progress of Ramdurg.
In the field of education it has not for
behind .there are three degree Collages. Many pu collages
there D.Ed collages one B.Ed collage BPED, ITI Pyara-medical
Collage, Computer Centers. Impart in of multidimensional
education to the people of Ramdurg and surrounding villages.
Ramdurg has stood if number no 1 position in Belgaum district
in economic position.
Ramdurg is a land where Indian culture
particularly the folk lore culture is a survived people
of Ramdurg are so cultured they retain all rituals, festivals,
fairs etc from generation to generation. Many grate artists
of Ramdurg got national and international recognition for
their remarkable contribution to folk tradition such as
‘Dollin Pada’, ‘Gigi Hadu’ etc.
It is a brave land which witnessed the
grate tragedy called “Ramdurg Duranth” a fighting
against the monarchy which is land mark in the history of
India and inspired many to revolt against the princely states
after Independence.
Ramdurg has also witnessed great literacy
writer like “D.S.Karki”,”B.C.Desai”
, “Ishwar Sanakal” etc who added futures to
kannada literature thus Ramdurg has historical, cultural,political.Economic
and Literacy importance.
